What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is what is known as a long-term skin condition, which means that although there is no cure and it cannot be 100% solved it can be managed well to minimise the long term effects on the skin. It is most common in women and can be genetic.

Rosacea manifests itself as flushing redness or red pimples and the nose, cheeks, forehead and chin are most commonly affected. It can be often be confused with acne but is a very different condition. The redness can also be accompanied by a burning or stinging feeling causing discomfort. Lifestyle and dietary choices can trigger the symptoms of rosacea and these can include; exercise, stress, eating hot & spicy foods, alcohol consumption, caffeine intake, hot drinks and for some, cheese.

Symptoms of Rosacea

Symptoms of rosacea are not exclusive to stinging and a red flush (tiny blood vessels or little red bumps), for some it can cause swelling around the eyes, orange skin patches, sore and sticky eyelids. If left for large amounts of time, say years, a thickening of the skin can occur usually on and around the nose. There is a wide variety of treatment options available to help tackle rosacea including antibiotics which can help in the short term with severe flair ups and prescription lotions.

Treatments for Rosacea

A highly effective treatment, often recommended by GPs and dermatologists is light therapy like a LED, IPL or intense pulsed light treatment, sometimes called a photofacial. The light pulses help to treat the delicate blood vessels in the skin which cause the flushing response minimising the visible redness. IPL is a highly effective, non-invasive treatment with minimal downtime and no side effects for Rosacea which usually involves a course of treatment with each session usually four to six weeks apart followed by regular maintenance treatments.

There are some tips we would encourage you to consider to help manage your rosacea. Wear a high factor SPF sunscreen daily to help protect the skin, at least SPF 30 and avoid excessive heat, sunlight and humid conditions. It’s best to use skincare formulated for sensitive skin, our practitioners can point you in the right direction plus in cold weather, try and cover your face.

Hydrafacial®

Using targeted Boosters to combat redness and pigmentation, as well as customising the peel strength and intensity of the exfoliation and extractions, Hydrafacial can be an effective way to manage Rosacea. Hydrafacial is not recommended if you have an impaired skin barrier, severe rosacea or currently having a flare up.

Dermalux® LED

Using near-infrared (830nm) LED targets deeper cells to stimulate the wound healing process, calming redness, irritation and scarring.
