Polynucleotides
What are polynucleotides?
Polynucleotides are the most popular treatment right now in aesthetics. Originally used in general medicine, polynucleotides are a revolutionary treatment primarily made up of fractions of ultra purified DNA from salmon or trout.
These injectables have bio-stimulating properties that are scientifically proven to regenerate skin at a cellular level, creating a natural appearance without the voluminous effects of other injectables like dermal fillers.
Their skin boosting benefits are innumerable, covering both immediate and long term skin health.
Polynucleotides are proven to:
- Stimulate collagen production
- Reduce inflammation
- Hydrate and repair skin at a cellular level
- Improve skin elasticity
- Increase skin cell turnover
Polynucleotides are the ideal introduction in to aesthetic treatments as this regenerative skin booster improves the quality of your skin without changing your existing features, providing natural results.

How do polynucleotides work?
At Jessica Skin Clinic, we use the gold standard brand of polynucleotide known as Ameela® (previously Nucleadyn).
Ameela® is the new line of a natural polynucleotide based bio-stimulating gels created from Salmon DNA fragments. It contains a high viscosity gel for protecting and rejuvenating the skin.
It is not a filler or a toxin treatment, it’s an injectable bio-stimulant gel that activates the production of type-1 collagen and the regeneration of skin tissues to create an immediate lifting effect. Ameela® is the perfect anti-ageing treatment for those who feel their skin is lacking elasticity and want a firmer, more contoured appearance. It is a brand-new science with added benefits that can also be used alongside your other facial aesthetic treatments.
There are 3 main types of Ameela® polynucleotide products:
Ameela® Eyes Polynucleotides
This product is used for the upper and lower eyelids. It will smooth fine lines and wrinkles, improve circulation, under eye puffiness and dark circles and it will improve skin thickness and hydration.
Ameela® Rejuvenation Polynucleotides
This product can be used for deep tear troughs, on the face, neck, decolletage, hands and hair. It will improve elasticity, tightening and contour and it will improve fine lines, wrinkles and skin tone.
Ameela® Face Polynucleotides
This product is used on the face and jawline. It is similar to Ameela Rejuvenation but with a higher concentration of Polynucleotides.
The Science Of Ameela®
Moisturising effect:
Ameela contains high molecular weight polynucleotide chains. The strong moisturising ability is a result of the water retention capabilities of the water absorbing properties of nucleotides. This structure of the polynucleotide molecule reacts instantly with water molecules to hydrate the skin.
Free radicals:
The polynucleotide chains also act as an immediate scavenger action against free radicals. The chemical structures of the nitrogenous ring on the polynucleotides has an ability to react immediately with free radicals – which then neutralizes them. When the polynucleotides molecule is being degraded by the bodys own enzyme, we get smaller particles which retain the same properties as the whole polynucleotide molecule. The progressive degradation of polynucleotide molecules by enzymes present, accentuate the protection activity against free radicals.
Bio-stimulation:
Polynucleotides connect with multiple cell receptors, which initiates a cascade of reactions.
Most importantly attracting stem cells to the area, which has an strong repairing effect on the tissue. Also enhances the formation of new capillaries (angionesis). Changes the structure of the fibrilles in our tissue which results in instant tightening and contouring of the tissue. Here at the clinic we see skin cells immediately lift and tighten post procedure!
What happens when we inject Ameela®?
Injecting polynucleotides results in bio-structuring in ALL tissue layers such as bone, muscle, and fat tissue. This has a fast effect on the skin, giving a lift in the skin structure after just a few minutes.
How can polynucleotides enhance your appearance?
Polynucleotides are being used to reverse the ageing of tissues and repair scarring by tackling the concern from the source, in contrast to the traditional approach, for example with fillers, which focuses on treating symptoms. Some of the applications of polynucleotides include:
- Improving the tone and texture of skin
- Improving the thickness and elasticity of skin, particularly good for the thin skin under eyes and around the mouth
- Rejuvenating treatment for older skin to treat fine lines and wrinkles
- Preventative treatment for younger skin
- Rehydration for dull skin at any age
- Treating dark circles as an alternative to tear trough fillers
- Reducing inflammation to helps with conditions such as rosacea
- Treating hyperpigmentation, sun damage, scarring, stretch marks and acne
- Treating alopecia and hair loss

FAQ’s
-
Ameela® is a powerful and effective injectable treatment, harnessing the technology of natural polynucleotidebased bio-stimulating gel to restore skin firmness, tone and elasticity whilst blocking the free radicals which are responsible for premature ageing. Polynucleotides help to improve the eye area by stimulating collagen, restructuring the tissues and regenerating the skin with improvement of superficial wrinkles and tightening of the skin, as well as an improvement in pigmentation and firmness. By stimulating the metabolic activity of the fibroblastic cells (the major cells responsible for the production of collagen) Ameela® naturally maintains the physiological functionality of the dermis, enabling production of the healthy collagen we have in our youth.
-
Ameela® polynucleotide treatment offers numerous benefits:
- Wrinkle Reduction: Significant decrease in wrinkles and fine lines.
- Skin Tone Improvement: Restores and enhances natural skin tone.
- Elasticity Restoration: Increases skin elasticity for a youthful appearance.
- Hydration Boost: Addresses dehydration, especially in the delicate periocular area.
- Minimal Downtime: Quick, non-invasive sessions with lasting results.
-
Individuals interested in natural, non-surgical skin rejuvenation, including those with sensitive skin, are suitable for Ameela® polynucleotide treatments.
However, pregnant or breastfeeding individuals or those with active skin infections may not be suitable. This will all be determined during a non-negotiable consultation.
-
The treatment requires 2-3 sessions which are 2-4 weeks apart.
Ameela® is reputable for its fast visible results. After the 2 sessions, you will begin to noticeimprovement in your skin texture and clearer skin tone.
-
The effect of polynucleotides can last for 6-9 months before you need a maintenance treatment. However, the result can ultimately last for about 1 year, especially with a good home skincare routine in place.
-
Experts considered the treatment one of the safest skin regeneration treatments.
Ameela® is safe for humans because it is made from salmon DNA which is found to be compatible with human DNA without triggering an immune response. Aside from that, the Salmon DNA used to produce Ameela® is highly purified and rid of any component that may have adverse effects.
There are other polynucleotide brands on the market, however, Jessica hand-picked Ameela® because it was the first polynucleotide on the market and is the longest-running, most established polynucleotide in aesthetics.
-
Ameela® is injected with a very small needle or cannula to minimise discomfort. You may experience mild stinging during the injection which will subside in a couple of minutes.
-
Ameela® is uniquely suitable for many different parts of the body, administered safely to the sensitive under eye area as well as other areas of the face, neck, décolleté, underarms, hands, inner thighs, abdomen and knees.
-
Historically, fine lines, wrinkles, puffiness, bags and other sins of ageing around the eye area have been difficult to treat, due to the delicate structure of the skin. By harnessing new technology using injectable polynucleotides, Ameela® enables these problems to be treated effectively, where traditional treatment with hyaluronic acid based dermal filler has been previously unsuitable due to a risk of swelling. Ameela® and other Polynucleotide treatments are considered one of the safest skin regeneration treatments. As the polynucleotides are made from highly purified marine DNA, it is highly compatible with our bodies without triggering an immune response.

Prior to undergoing the procedure, you are asked to tell your medical practitioner:
• If you are suffering from any illness or taking any medication
• Of any problems you have had in the past with injections in general
• If you have any inflammation in the muscles or skin at the planned treatment site
• If you are pregnant or breast feeding
Avoid taking aspirin or anti-inflammatories prior to treatment as these will increase the risk of bruising
-
Following the procedure, patients are advised to:
0-2 hours after treatment
- Refrain from touching the treatment area
0-12 hours after treatment
- Refrain from wearing make-up
0-24hours after treatment
- Refrain from rubbing or massaging the treatment area; cleanse gently as required
- Avoid saunas, steam rooms or any other source of excessive heat, which could increase the risk of the toxin spreading to an unwanted area
- Avoid vigorous exercise - Avoid consuming alcohol

All aesthetic procedures are associated with some degree of risk. Your medical practitioner will explain these in detail during initial consultation, enabling you to reach an informed decision on whether you wish to proceed.
Immediately after treatment there may be some redness, tenderness or numbness, itching or bruising. These possible side effects are usually mild and generally disappear within the first week.
Whilst rare, the most serious potential complication is a vascular occlusion which occurs when blood is no longer able to pass through a blood vessel. Symptoms of vascular occlusion include immediate, severe, and disproportionate pain and acute onset of colour change to skin at the treatment site (blanching or white spots/blotches). If you have any concerns you may be experiencing vascular occlusion following treatment please contact the clinic.
It is normal to feel ‘firmness’ at the treatment site for the first few days; over time the area will soften.
Thorough cleansing of the skin prior to treatment as well as careful placement of each of the injections and a detailed knowledge of facial anatomy, helps us to ensure these risks are as minimal as possible. You might wish to gently apply ice or a cold compress to the injection area after treatment to help to reduce swelling.

Alternative forms of non-surgical line and wrinkle management and skin conditioning include line and wrinkle relaxing treatment (botox), Dermal Fillers and Profhilo. For treatment of undereye circles, Tear Trough treatment may offer some benefit. Risks and potential complications are associated with alternative forms of treatment.
