Dermal Fillers
PORTSMOUTH
What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are a non-invasive, non-surgical way to create a youthful appearance by lifting and plumping different areas of the face. They effectively reduce wrinkles and folds, the most common signs of ageing, and can make you look younger. They can also be combined with Anti-Wrinkle treatments.
Dermal fillers are hyaluronic acid injectables successfully used to reduce wrinkles and to recreate volume. Loss of volume in the face is one of the key culprits of ageing. As we grow older, our facial muscles and connecting tissue begin to sag, often resulting in sunken cheeks and temples.
Hyaluronic acid, which is found naturally in the body, is synthetically produced as a pure product and used as a filling agent for various parts of the face. Our preferred dermal filler is the world-renowned Juvederm.
Please get in touch to book a dermal filler treatment including lip filler, cheek filler and chin filler at our luxury skin and aesthetics clinic near Portsmouth.
How do dermal fillers work?
As we age, we start to lose volume in certain areas of the face which can make us look tired and sunken. This is caused by the body’s decreased ability to produce collagen and elastin. Unlike wrinkles which require muscle relaxants to soften them, facial volume and folds require a dermal filler to help re-volumise and hydrate the area.
Hyaluronic acid is a natural sugar present in the human body. When injected, it can repair and reverse the ageing process. These injections instantly fill and soften the area, enhancing and creating volume where needed. With an emphasis on a ‘less is more’ approach, our desire is to always create a natural, fresh look, adding more to the area as required.
Dermal Fillers are exceptionally effective at treating the face: to balance asymmetry, contouring and defining features, plumping lips and cheeks, restructuring temples, jaw lines and chins, correcting acne scars, improving the look of the nose through non-surgical nose job and refreshing ageing hands.
Our choice of brand for hyaluronic acid dermal filler is Juvederm® – the most trusted, researched brand on the market today. Our fillers are long lasting – between 6 to 18 months – and non-allergenic. They are 100% biodegradable and non-permanent, ensuring the highest levels of safety at all times.
A lot of people worry about looking “overdone” with fillers as they see celebrities with a “pillow face”. Our filler treatments are always conservative and never go past the point to where you would look unnatural or overfilled. No-one should be able to tell you’ve had filler treatment, instead you’ll look refreshed and well rested. The best work is invisible!
All of our injectables are carried out by our Registered Nurse Practitioner.

FAQ’s
-
Dermal filler is made up of Hylauronic Acid (HA) which is a naturally occurring substance already found within the body.
At Jessica Skin Clinic, we use the gold standard brand Juvederm®.
-
Dermal fillers use a natural substance called Hyaluronic Acid (HA). Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a naturally occurring molecule that the body produces.
This chemical is completely safe and acts as a humectant to draw moisture into the skin. It keeps our body plump, hydrated, and healthy. However, due to time and environmental factors, our body naturally reduces the amount of Hyaluronic Acid it produces over time.

Treatment time will vary depending on the area being treated, but on average appointments take 30-45 minutes. This includes an in-depth consultation, application of anaesthetic (medical strength topical numbing cream), administration of filler, massage, and complete aftercare advice.
-
The length of time dermal fillers last is dependant on a few factors, including what type of filler is used, the area being treated and the volume of filler being used.
Typically, they will last anywhere between 6 to 18 months. Our Nurse Practitioner will be able to provide a more accurate timeline during your consultation, after determining your exact treatment.
Factors that will affect the lifespan of your Dermal Fillers include age, metabolism, level of exercise, alcohol intake, and lifestyle. Clients can have treatments when they feel necessary unless advised otherwise by our practitioners.
Effects of the treatment are visible immediately.
To get maximum results from your treatment, be sure to adhere to the aftercare given to you by your practitioner.
48 hours post treatment, you must refrain from any alcohol, strenuous exercise, make-up application, UVA tanning beds, and saunas.
Please remember, excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, strenuous exercise, and sun exposure can affect and help to reduce the lifespan of your treatment.
-
Although people often feel a slight discomfort with injections in general, having fillers injected is much less painful than many expect. The comfort of the treatment is often determined by the application technique.
To ensure minimal pain, local anaesthetic cream is administered to clients on the arrival of their appointment, thus allowing enough time for the area to feel completely numb when receiving treatment.
The dermal filler that we use also contains the ingredient lidocaine, allowing anaesthetic to be injected into the area with the filler, ensuring your procedure is completely tolerable.
-
Before any treatment, it’s important to know all of your options and the permanency of the treatment you’re having.
With regards to dermal fillers they are not a permanent treatment and require maintenance appointments to sustain your desired look.
If at any point you decide that you no longer wish to have dermal filler, it can easily be dissolved.

As Dermal Fillers are made up of a naturally occurring substance, it is extremely rare to suffer an allergic reaction. General side effects are some swelling and bruising or sometimes pain at the injection site that can occur after the treatment. These side effects will typically subside within 5-7 days post-procedure. If you are to experience any side effects after that timeframe, or are concerned, please contact us and we will put you at ease immediately.
If you are prone to cold sores (herpes), lip augmentation can trigger a breakout. If you are suffering from cold sores at the time of your appointment, we will be unable to treat you as this is a contraindication and can result in complications.
-
Post treatment, you may experience some bruising, swelling, redness and tenderness around the area.
This will subside in 5-7 days as is not cause for concern.
There is typically no downtime needed after the first 24 hours post treatment, however we would recommend that clients avoid big events or strenuous activity for up to a week after having Dermal Fillers.

Dermal Fillers are fast-acting, and patients will see results almost immediately. However, final results will be seen 7-10 days post procedure. This gives any swelling and inflammation time to subside.

Although fillers are not a permanent solution, there are some things you can do to maintain your look and make them last longer. Some of the things you can do include:
Eat a balanced diet – Eating well does wonders to combat the signs of ageing. It can also help to sustain your Dermal Fillers longer. Unhealthy processed food causes inflammation which causes the injection to metabolise more quickly.
Manage your exercise – Maybe the only time you will be discouraged from exercising too much is with dermal fillers. Still keep your usual exercise routine, it is just important to know that the more calories you burn the quicker you will need a top up treatment.
A good skincare regime – Keeping your skin hydrated and protected can also help to improve the results of your Dermal Fillers. Wearing SPF and blocking UV sun rays can help to maintain your Dermal Fillers. We have a wide range of medical-grade skincare in clinic that our practitioners can advise you on.
-
Yes! One of the benefits of Dermal Fillers is that they can be completely dissolved with another injectable treatment known as Hyaluronidase or Hyalase.
If you change your mind and want to reverse the effects of filler, we can inject Hyalase into the area that was treated. This is a very common procedure and is just as safe as the fillers themselves.
-
Although topping up your filler is recommended, the time in between treatments varies between people. On average, patients wait 4 to 6 months before a top up appointment.
If you were to wait a full 12 to 18 months for a top up, your treated area is likely to have returned to its original state.

There are a number of things you can do at home to reduce the side effects of Dermal Fillers.
Applying a cold compress to the treated area for 10 minutes every half an hour as soon as possible following treatment.
Avoiding activities that involve high intensity or heat for over 24 hours. This includes things like strenuous exercise, spas, saunas and hot showers.
Don’t apply any pressure to the area for the first 48 hours. This includes sleeping on your back if possible, and not rubbing the treated area. Resist massaging the treated area unless instructed to do so by your Nurse Practitioner.
Apply Bepanthen or Arnica cream three times/day for the next 7 days. This will soothe any tenderness or discomfort and prevent effects from worsening.
Avoid consuming alcohol for a minimum of 24 hours. However, for best results, we recommend avoiding alcohol one week prior to and one week following your treatment.
Avoid products with active cosmeceutical properties, for example, AHAs, retinols, and vitamin C.
Avoid oil based makeup for 24 hours.
Further skin treatments around the affected area should not be avoided completely for at least 2 weeks after treatment. This includes waxing, chemical peels, facials, skin needling, microdermabrasion, or any laser treatments.
